Question 4 - How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

No.1: Youtube

Youtube is a website that enables you to upload and watch videos on-line. This website has allowed me to create videos that explain certain tasks which have taken place and lets me upload them onto the website where I am then able to copy the link of the video and place it onto my Blogger. This is another place where it can also be viewed.

Another plus side to Youtube is that I am able to view other related films or short films and get helpful advice for when we came to making our own production. I will also be able to use Youtube to upload our film onto my Youtube account and receive comments and ratings from people in the video streaming community.

If Youtube was unavailable, I would have had to obtain all of my research from DVD's, books & magazines as well as other websites that have relating clips.

No. 2: Blogger

Blogger has been the website on which we have been able to upload blogs containing all the written work for both this years and last years projects. By using Blogger, I am able to edit and  update any pieces of work whenever I please as well as adding more information on each task that I have made.

Another plus side to Blogger, is that it is more reliable at preventing work from being lost in the process. Throughout both AS & A2 media, I felt  that I have understood Blogger more & efficiently.  This enables me to be able to create more professional & mature looking posts.

If Blogger was unable for me to do & view my coursework, I could have tried using other programs such as LiveJournal or Tumblr which are other blogging programmes. The only other alternative was having to do it all manually on paper.

No. 3: Internet Explorer

The Internet was what I used to get access to these websites where I would complete my work and find information on tasks. If the Internet was not available, I would have had to do all my work on paper or on Microsoft Office, and I would only be able to get information from books and magazines.

No. 4: Facebook

Facebook is a social networking programme which  I have used as a great way to communicate with other members of my group. Another reason for this is so we as a group could organise times with lists of required times, dates and equipment for our shooting dates.

How this works was that we created an event saying where we were filming, what day & time, and what equipment we would need.  It would then be sent to all members of our group for analysis. Without Facebook I would have had to communicate over the telephone and by using print-outs which would be circulated within the group.

No. 5: Unsigned Band Web

Unsigned Band Web is the website where we obtained our music  that appears in our short film 'Fleeting'. We could only use websites like this to get our soundtrack because if we had used existing music, it would be classed as copyright which is not allowed. We listened individually  to soundtracks  that we thought would collaborate well in our short film. Once our decision was reached we then listened to the chosen few for us to then decide which ones would be used.

Without Unsigned Band Web available, I would have had to manually compose music with instruments and then record it, or not have music at all.

No. 6: Hotmail

Hotmail is the website that I have used to transfer work back and forth to myself and other members of my group. As I do not have a USB Stick, which is another way of transferring work, Hotmail  was  how I  exchanged ideas with other members of my group.

If Hotmail was unavailable I would then have had to get myself a USB Stick to transfer and receive work to and from other members of my group.

No. 7: Sony PD150 Camera

The Sony PD150 was only introduced to me in A2 meaning that I had  to learn how to use it from scratch as I was chosen as the cameraman to film our entire production. After learning all the basics, I was able to film our project to my full potential.

By knowing the basics it hopefully meant that I was now able to pick up instructions and uses of other pieces of equipment. If we as a group were unable to use this technology, we would have had to use one of the Sony Handy-Cams &/or Flip Videos to film our entire project.

No. 8: Canon EOS 450D

I used this camera for taking pictures of things such as postcard design ideas which I transferred from the camera to the computer.  I was then able to look at them constantly rather than having to remember what the images looked like as I could not use the camera to view the pictures 24/7.

As this was a professional and expensive camera, I was able to use the attached effects that the camera offered in order for me to get the perfect pictures for my postcard designs. If this camera was not available,  I would have had to either use a different and less technical camera or draw every design by hand.

No. 9: Flip Video Camera

The Flip Video Camera was used previously during our project of an opening sequence last year at AS level. This meant that I was already familiar and confident when using this piece of equipment. It had a USB stick installed into it  which made it easy to move and record video straight from the device and onto a computer.

This device was used to record feedback videos from our first audience which I would then place onto my blog & reply to. The way this was used made it much simpler and an easier and more direct way of getting feedback. Without this device, I would have either filmed the feedback on the Handy-cam, a voice recorder or simply have taken notes on paper which I would then write up onto my blog.

No. 10: Wind shield Microphone

This microphone was used throughout the filming of our project as this is what we used to record our sound. It is plugged into either the first or the second input on the PD150, where the sound levels can then be monitored and adjusted accordingly. We unfortunately had a problem with this piece of equipment as the sound kept cutting out whilst we were filming. This meant that when this happened, we would need to re-film over what we had originally done until it was complete with sound.

Without the microphone the camera wouldn't have recorded any form of sound which meant that we would have had to use another model of microphone or divert to  a Sony handy cams as they have inbuilt microphones.

No. 11: Hp Invent Card/Paper Scanner

The scanner has allowed me to put all pieces of work that I have completed on my blog. Examples such as Postcard designs and Film review designs which I may have wanted to go onto the computer would have needed to be scanned. By being able to scan any work onto the computer and onto my blog, I have been able to save myself a copy of the work that I have completed. This is imperative in case the original copy was lost.due to lending it out to another member in my production group to work from .

Without the scanner work that I had completed it would have been more difficult  putting it onto the computer.  I may have needed to result in taking photographs of the work and then transferring them from the camera onto the computer.

No. 12: Laptops/Computers

Laptops/computers were used at all times for doing work throughout this subject. They were used for things such as writing all of the work that I had done, going onto  the Internet to access my blog &/or researching information that I may have needed to include in my work.

Without  laptops/computers  the research would have to have been found in things like magazine & books. Also all of my coursework & group work would have been hand written, this is not ideal as it increases the chance of losing work and being less organised.

No. 13: Sennheiser Headphones

These headphones were used throughout our filming as they are of high quality and have advantages such as being able to focus individually and closely on the sound production of our project. Also they are very clear and do not fuzz when the volume is at its highest.

Without the Sennheiser headphones we would have either to have had to bring in our own headphones or possibly use speakers.

No. 14: Mobile Phones

The mobile phones were used to contact other members of the group if need be.  As soon as we  formed  the 'Fleeting' Production Group, we each exchanged mobile phone numbers so that we would have  them had we needed to contact another member of the production team.  This turned out to be very useful when it came to filming as  one of our locations was at Bobby's house who was our director.  Myself and Emma were able to ring her or message her when and where we needed to go as there was a chance  that we may have got lost whilst on our way.

It was also a quick way to check with each other that our actors were available on a specific day and that we all brought the right documents. If we all didn't have phones, then filming and group meetings would have been much harder to arrange and we would have struggled to liaise with each other.

No. 15: Adobe Premiere Pro

Adobe Premiere Pro is the program that we have been using to edit our A2 projects on. As I have used this program last year in AS, I managed to  understand  and improve my knowledge of how to use various tools & editing advantages that it offers.

Without Adobe Premiere Pro,  other programs that I am unfamiliar with such as Windows Live Movie Maker would have to have been used.

No. 16: Adobe Photoshop C53

Adobe Photoshop is the program which I used to create pieces of work such as Postcard Designs, Film Reviews and Technical Recce's. As I was new to this program, I was not familiar with the way it works however, for as long as I have been using Photoshop, I feel that I have been adding to the basic skills that I already had.

Without this program, I think that I would have had to use a program such as either Serif Photoplus, Serif Drawplus &/or Paint.

No. 17: Microsoft Word 2003/2007

I used this program  often during this project for completing work within my Pre-production work & Post-production work. These tasks consisted of my Location Recce, Storyboard, Shot List & Production Logo. It offered  a variety of fonts that were effective as we found the project title which we used in our short film credits.

If I was unable to use Microsoft Word throughout this project, I would have either had to hand write all of my work, or use other programs such as NotePad, Microsoft Powerpoint &/or WordPad.

Post 18: Production Report

On Tuesday 22nd February (22/02/11) we began filming our short film at our first location in The Village Gardens which was an area located next to the All Saints Church of England (C of E) Church in Kings Langley. As I have mentioned previously in other posts, my role was  cameraman meaning that I was responsible for filming our entire short film. On the day, I had the responsibility to bring with me our Technical Recce sheets so that I could remind myself of what camera position I needed for each shot.

As well as the Technical Recce sheets, I also decided to bring with me a camera manual that I printed off myself to help me on the day of filming if I needed any help on working the Camera. I felt that when it came to filming on the day, we needed to make sure we were all organised & we needed to work together so that everything came together in the correct manner and I felt we did this successfully.

We all arrived on set at 10am where we began setting up all the equipment that we were individually responsible for. This included the Camera, Microphone, Digital Camera and finally a Sony Mini DV player. Whilst we were setting up the equipment, we recommended that our actors should do a quick rehearsal to finalise their roles & make sure they knew their queues.

It was vital that I brought with me the shot list, as when filming we followed it very carefully as we needed to make sure that we were filming the right effect. The reason for the Mini DV player was because it helped Becky who was able to view everything that was being filmed, and because she was the Director. I f she felt the shots that we were shooting didn't look right, she would be able to stop and re-position the actors or myself and Emma.

When it came to our actors on the day of the filming, I thought that they did remarkably  well at staying focused with the job in hand, & also staying in character extremely well.

What most impressed me, was Steven who played the Teenager in our film,This was due to the fact that he was extremely focused and his personality shone through. This  played a big part of his acting because he is the sort of person who is very mature and confident when it comes to performing.

He also has acting experience as does other actors in our film, which is helpful as  it lets them portray the character that they are playing as well as picturing how the character should be perceived & .

As we can see from this picture on the right, Steven was told to wear casual clothing of which he successfully did. As I was the camera man, I was constantly busy filming and setting up equipment, therefore we agreed that Emma would take pictures of the characters so that they can be identified as well as their clothing.

We did however have on problem with Steven's clothing as the brand of his hoodie is noticeable in our film, which means that copyright can come into action, however we realised that this is not that much of a big deal.

I felt our young actor who played Sam was very impressive & mature for his age. He seemed to take direction really well and if he made mistakes, was quick to correct them.

As we can see from this picture on the left, we can see that Rachael who played the office worker, has been told to dress smartly and professional, of which we can safely say that she has done.

Again, Emma took this picture as myself and Bobbie were to busy setting up the equipment to do so.

Jonathan's character has been identified to be smart as in every scene we see him wearing a tie, smart trousers and smart shoes. We decided that Jonathan should look smart as looking because we thought that as he has with him an expensive camera, it made sense if he looked like a wealthy man.

We also thought that because of the situation he has experienced, it would look wrong if he was to wear bright coloured clothing, this is why we see him wear a lot of black plan coloured clothing throughout the film, as it adds extra effect to his characters feelings.

Our filming was on a cold miserable day & went on from 10am to 4pm which wasn't very pleasant for the actors particularly Jonathan as he was used for that whole time period due to the fact that he was our main character.

If we were to film again I feel we should have provided beverages for all members of the cast and crew if necessary so that their metabolism was kept to a good level and also so that they were kept active and energetic.
